Pay for Performance

Denver Public Schools is working on a pay for performance plan for its foodservice employees. Leo Lesh, retiring executive director for enterprise management, says he has wanted to do a pay for performance program for a couple of years. "In January we had a chance to rewrite the union book, so we proposed to the union that they should look at a pay for performance plan, and they agreed that it was a good idea," Lesh says. The department applied for and received a $150,000 grant from the American Federation of Teachers Union, of which the foodservice workers union is a subset. That money is being used to create a pay for performance program, including the hiring of a project manager and consultants.
