Asingleblastomerecontainingthea€?germplasma€?of32-cellstageXenopusembryoswasculturedwith[3H]thymidineuntilthecontrolembryosdevelopedtotheneurulastage.Theexplants,showingasphericalmassinwhichthenucleiofallcellswerelabeled,wereimplantedintotheprospectiveplaceofpresumptiveprimordialgermcells(pPGCs)intheendodermalcellmassofunlabeledhostembryosoftheneurulastage.LabeledPGCsaswellasunlabeled,hostPGCswerefoundinthegenitalridgesofexperimentaltadpoles.Thisindicatesthattheprecursorofgermcells,correspondingtopPGCsinnormalembryosoftheneurulastage,intheexplantsmigratedtogenitalridgesjustattherightmomenttobecomePGCs,andsuggeststhatthedevelopmentalprocessprogressednormally,evenintheexplants,asfarasthedifferentiationofpPGCsisconcerned.
