I have been interested to read in recent issues of Buses about continuing innovation and improvements to bus services across the country. One might gain the impression that all are heading in the right direction. We have news of the really good, but rarely do we hear of the really bad. Can I nominate Ashford, Kent as a place to visit to find out the reality of poor bus services? At first sight this is surprising. Ashford is the fastest growing town in Kent with a population exceeding 110,000 and set to reach 140,000 within the next 10 years. Bus services have simply not kept pace with this growth. The principal local operator is Stagecoach East Kent. The company has an exemplary record of investment and innovation in other parts of its area. We have new services and new buses in Canterbury/Herne Bay, Folkestone, Dover and the Isle of Thanet. In these places all is well.
