1996 saw the beginning of the implementation of the "9th Five-Year Plan" of Sichuan’s transportation program. During this period, the province has planned to build thirteen expressways, some of which are already under construction, eight are already constructed, but not yet in use.The main Expessway between Chengdu and Chongqing was opened to traffic in 1995.Provincial transportation will be focused on constructing a network of land and water transportation in 1997, with the construction of expressway being the main projects. A length of 800 kilometres of expressway will be built, so that the total mileage of expressway in the province will reach this year 1, 000 kilometres.
