Reassessing the Role of Translation in English Language Teaching

@@ PreamblernMy purpose in this talk is to reassess the role of translation in English language teaching. I propose to do this by examining how approaches to the use of translation in the teaching of English have changed and developed over the years and then evaluating the current state of the art in order to establish some possible guidelines for the way forward. And whilst I shall be doing so from a predominantly European perspective. I also intend to consider examples and comments from educators around the world. With regard to China in particular, it is important to learn from these insights without necessarily copying the techniques involved or repeating mistakes that have been made elsewhere. For the main part of my talk, I will focus on theoretical aspects, but towards the end I intend to provide you with some practical suggestions on how to implement the theory in the classroom.
