大学是学术自治和学术自由的共同体，其“象牙塔”精神暗含着大学是探求高深学问、追求真理、关怀终极、关注人类命运的场所，是人类文明进步的精神殿堂。走进象牙塔是责任的呼唤和高等教育自身的呼唤，对中国大学具有特殊意义。在固守象牙塔的同时，大学也应超越象牙塔，顺应时代发展的脉搏，满足社会的需要。%The university is a community of academic autonomy and academic freedom. The spirit of the"ivory tower"implies that university is a place to explore the profound knowledge, pursue the truth, care about the ultimate and also the destiny of mankind as well as a spiritual hall exhibiting the progress of human civi-lization. To go into the ivory tower is the calling of responsibility and higher education itself, which is of special significance to Chinese universities. When still sticking to the belief of ivory tower, universities also should go beyond it, and follow the pulse of the development to meet the needs of the society.
