Fukuzawa Yukichi was a famous political theorist during the Meiji Era. He not only regarded literature, especially Chinese Literature as valueless learning but also believed that the problem in Japan was the underdevelopment of mathematics and science. However, his literary criticism was not tangible. If we read any literary works written by Confucian scholars, we can firmly accept that literature is not entertainment. For literature itself has a close relationship with society and politics, and as such it is quite useful to our lives.%福泽谕吉大声疾呼西方近代科学的同时,对于文学,尤其是汉文学表现出极大反感。在福泽眼里,文学不仅没有实用价值而且成为了摄取西方科学的绊脚石。然而对于真正的儒学家来说,文道合一才是创作文学作品的根本目的。文学并非是游宴之媒,而是与社会,特别是国家政治状况有着密切联系。同时,文学与科学也并非水火不容,两者间同样存在着相关性。
