朝鲜王朝时期所绘制的《天下图》，其基本图式和主要内容都与古老的华夏典籍《山海经》所载地理知识一脉相承，可以说，这幅地图就是对《山海经》所记述内容的形象图示。《山海经》之所以对古代朝鲜影响如此之大，是因为它是世界上最早明确记载朝鲜地理的文献，它让古代朝鲜人据此来想象世界和自我，进而得以确认其在世界上的地位和价值。这种观念的背后则是朝鲜王朝对于华夏文化的强烈认同意识。实际上，《山海经》不但能证明朝鲜与中华在地理上同气连枝，而且也是古代朝鲜文明悠久、早得华夏文明真传的重要依据。从《天下图》对《山海经》中地名的标注方位不难看出，朝鲜学者为了拉近本国与华夏中心在文明和空间上的距离而对《山海经》的记载着意操弄，朝鲜王国从中获得了其他文本所无法提供的身份证明和自我满足。从这个意义上说，《天下图》其实是古代朝鲜人的一幅较真实世界地图更令人着迷的精神地图。%The basic schema and main contents of the World Map drawn by the Joseon Dynasty are all consistent with the geographical knowledge contained in the ancient Chinese classics Shan Hai Jing and it can be said that this map is the vivid image icon of the contents in Shan Hai Jing. This book had so great impact on ancient Korea, as Shan Hai Jing is the world ’s earliest documented record of ancient Korea ’s geography, it allowed ancient Koreans to imagine the world and themselves, and then to confirm their status and value in the world. Behind this concept, it is a strong sense of identity of the Joseon Dynasty for Chinese culture. In fact, Shan Hai Jing not only proved that ancient Korea and China are geographically the same branch, but also the ancient Korean had a long civilization which stemed from China. In the World Map annotated the orientation of place names in Shan Hai Jing, it is easy to see that ancient Korea scholars were in order to narrow the gap between them and the Chinese Center in civilization and space to manipulate for the recording of the classic. The Joseon Kingdom got the proof of identity and self-satisfaction from Shan Hai Jing which it couldn't get from other texts. In this sense, the map is actually a more fascinating spiritual map of the ancient Koreans than the real world map.
