There has been renewed interest in character education lately due to the violence and negative behaviors in schools. Many schools address the issue of moral support through their mission statement and curricula. Although it is recognized that curriculum alone may have limited influence on students, the teachers can certainly make a difference by implementing positive character traits throughout their daily lesson plans. For this reason, exploring how teachers can implement positive character traits and how students will react about character education becomes important. This Qualitative case study will be an observation of what impact teachers will encounter on the influence of student character development. The purpose will be to examine what role character education plays in the development of increasing positive or maintaining negative behavior for elementary students knowing that their socio-economic environment is a factor of influence.; This will be a qualitative study employing an Ethnographic design with case study format that will utilize interviews and classroom observations to collect data. This will be completed with the assistance of the Saginaw Public School District. The Michigan Model Curriculum, which is a character education based program, will be incorporated in an after-school-program for research purposes. This character education based program will be utilized for data collection, thus allowing students with learning opportunities that show their dedication to fostering individual goals as well as a sense of leadership.
