AUGMENTATION OF ALCOHOLIC FERMENTATION BY SOME MEDICINAL PLANT EXTRACTS

Traditional liquid ayurvedic medicines like aswas and arishtas which are prepared from plant extracts contain self generated alcohol. It has been observed that in presence of plant materials enhanced quantities of alcohol are obtained during formulations of these medicines. In the present article attempts have been made to screen thirteen different plant extracts to study augmentation of alcoholic fermentations using jaggery as well as molasses media. Injaggery media compared to control increasedformation of alcohol was noticed in presence of all the thirteen plant extracts. However six extracts giving higher alcohol yields were selectedforfurther studies. At pH 5.0 in presence of Pippli and Rasna upto 8.6% alcohol was obtained using Jaggery media whereas medium without any plant extract gave up to 5.4% alcohol. In molasses media overall higher alcohol yields were observed as compared to jaggery medium. However as comparison to its control there was no enhancement of alcohol yield except Pippli sample.
