Prior research has shown that entering college students typically maintain unclear expectations of engineering work. For these students, faculty often serve as arbiters of disciplinary knowledge by delivering and translating skills, information, and discourse necessitated by engineering industry. Through pedagogical practices, assessment strategies, and course content, faculty inherently communicate to students what are considered to be valued skills and knowledge in engineering, demonstrating to them who engineers are and what engineers do.
