Teaching Teachers to Teach with Technology while Encouraging Students to Look Forward to College: A Case Study of Learner-Centered Training

For the past two summers, supported by funding from a grant from the Lilly Endowment, educators at DePauw University and a rural Indiana K-12 school corporation have successfully collaborated to develop a teacher/student technology institute in which participants learn about using technology in a variety of ways both in the classroom and out. The goals of the project are many and diverse, and the key to meeting those goals was to develop a learner-centered environment in which project-based, collaborative learning was promoted. This paper describes the project, the methods we used to foster that environment, and the outcomes resulting from participants' attendance at the workshops. It also ideifies ways in which we have adapted our model to other forms of technology-related training in the university environment, especially those involving faculty instructonal technology support and education.
