As a culminating activity in teacher preparation programs, pre-service teachers undergo a variety ofassessments that include observations, teacher work samples, and portfolios. While each of theseassessments offers partial information about teacher readiness, a comprehensive performanceassessment has been lacking. To address this need, the Educative Teacher PerformanceAssessment, or edTPA, has been designed as a means for teacher candidates (student teachers) todemonstrate that they can plan, teach, and assess student learning in an effective way [1]. This paperfocuses on the initial phases of this innovative teacher assessment in a teacher education program inthe United States. In this paper, we describe the assessment as well as the programmatic changesthat have been implemented to create a meaningful, educative experience for pre-service teachers.
