Determination of Bisphenol A in US Infant Formulas: Updated Methods and Concentrations

A LC-MS/MS method for the determination of BPA in infant formula was developed and single laboratory validated. The method was reproducible (10percent RSD), reliable (104-107percent isotope corrected recovery) and sensitive (LOD < 0.15 ng g~(-1)). Liquid formula samples had an average as-consumed BPA concentration of 3.4 ng g~(-1) and ranged from 0.5 to 11 ng g~(-1), which is similar to previously reported literature results. Powder formula samples, except for one, showed no detectable BPA concentrations (< 0.15 ng g~(-1)). Infant formula manufacturer and can surface area-to-formula ratio were the primary factors affecting BPA concentrations. Geographic location and product age did not affect infant formula BPA concentrations. LC-MS/MS method developed for analysis of infant formula was successfully applied to a limited number of canned foods. Preliminary results are in general consistent with previously published BPA concentrations determined for canned foods.
