Lipid 654, a non-glycerol and non-phospholipid complex lipid of P. ging, can be hydrolyzed by either phospholipase A2 from porcine pancreatic or honey bee venom to yield Lipid 430 and isoC15:0 fatty acid. P. ging Lipid 654 has two groups of isoforms that can be identified using differential mobility separation. Only a fraction of one isoform group can undergo enzymatic hydrolysis and the enzyme-susceptible fraction appears to be the biologically active form of Lipid 654. Two atoms of ~(18)O can be added to the C15:0 fatty acid product. When using buffer containing ~(18)O-water, only iso-branched fatty acid, not anteiso-branched, can incorporate heavy oxygen via enzyme catalysis.
