The migration behavior of actinides in the environment as a result of microbial activity should be clarified for estimating the potential hazards of the geological disposal of high-level radioactive wastes. Actinides can exist in different oxidation states of III, IV, V, and VI in solution, and their chemical behavior depends on the oxidation states. actinides (V) and (VI) are more mobile than actinides(III) and (IV) in ground water. The biological effect on actinide migration behavior is still being intensively investigated. We have carried out the sorption/desorption experiments of U(VI) and Pu(VI) with the microorganisms of Bacillus subtilis and a mixture of B. subtilis and clay mineral of kaolinite to clarify the role of soil microbes in actinides migration.
