Introduction: In the literature there is an ongoing discussion about the potential benefits of mobile bearings for clinical and functional outcome in TKA (1,2). Possible advantages of mobile bearings like reduced polyethylene wear by increased contact areas between the bearings, minimized implant constraint and reduced stresses in the implant-implant and implant-bone interfaces, as well as implant self alignment and improved biomechanics with better functional outcome are mentioned by several authors. But still there is lack of studies according to criteria of EBM. The aim of this study was to compare clinically and radiologically mobile versus fixed bearing implants without any other variation in implant design, implantation technique or rehabilitation protocol in a prospective, randomized evaluation. Our hypothesis was that there will be no statistically significant differences between both concepts in the early clinical and radiographical follow up.
