A HPLC with the UV and R.I.D detectors were employed to characterize the 115~220°C distillate fraction from coprocessing of coal and petroleum resid. This fraction was effectively separated into class components, such as alkanes, 1-ring aromatics, 2-ring aromatics, 3-ring aromatics, poly-aromatics and polar compounds. When coal was hydrogenated alone, the yield of the 2-ring aromatics is higher than other class components. Hydrogenation of resids, in other hand, produces more alkanes and 1-ring aromatics. The composition of the fraction from coprocessing of coal and petroleum resids varies mainly with the type of resid being treated. The fraction obtained generally contains large amount of aromatics and can not be used directly as transportation fuels. Possible interactions between the coal and resids are proposed.
