-1-AbstractA process is described for the simultaneous hydro-cracking or coprocessing of coal and petroleum pitch.The pitch is obtained by upstream distillation of heavyhydrocarbon oils to produce a 100% pitch fraction. Aslurry of the pitch and coal is passed through a confinedhydrocracking or coprocessing zone, and the effluentemerging from the zone is separated into a gaseous streamcontaining a wide boiling range of material and a slurrystream containing heavy hydrocarbons. The use of pitchrather than lower boiling distillates results in highernet distillate yields and better quality distillates.
