It is shown that the energy release rate for a moving dislocation may be obtained by using the energy flux through the slip-plane. This facilitates the calculation for the case of a general motion of the dislocation, since it requires only the 0(1) term in the near-field expansion of the resolved shear stress radiated by the dislocation, which is already obtained. This energy release rate is equated to the externally supplied energy-rate to give the equation of motion for a dislocation.
