In order to substitute the metallic interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) in the state-of-the-art AFCs with through-the-thickness polymeric electrodes the electric conductive polymer polypyrrole has been synthesised in thicknesses up to 800 μm and tuned up to electric conductivities of 97 S/cm. A structuring technique that allows manufacturing IDEs structures made of PPy has been developed. The integration of fibres in the polymer has also been analysed.
