Research on English Learning Ability of Third Graders

In order to improve English teaching practice in primary school, using affiliated primary school of Henan Polytechnic University as a case study, this paper conducts a pilot research on English learning performance of two-consecutive-year, third-grade pupils. Questionnaire surveys and interviews are applied in this study. The result demonstrates that although these third-grade pupils display great interest in learning English overall, there are problems worthy of note. Amongst 229 students interviewed, approximately 67% of the pupils have difficulties in listening, speaking, reading or writing. Nearly 43% of pupils interviewed feel nervous when practicing English or being asked questions in class. Despite the fact that most of students have been enrolled in after-class English tutoring class, their interests of learning English have not increased. As a matter of fact, most of students do not take the initiative to learn English. Most parents are able to offer family English tutoring to different degrees, which, nevertheless, is limited by simple teaching method and parents' English ability. It is discovered that students' interest can be stimulated by their adoration of certain teacher. Based on the survey results, it is suggested that multiple means should be explored to arouse students' interest and encourage their endeavor of English learning. Teachers are expected to conduct frequent communication with students. School should devote more investment to improve English teaching facilities. The communication mechanism among school, parent and teacher will lead to the establishment of a better English learning environment for the students.
