The composite filter element, described in the parent Specification and comprising a fine sieve integrally united to a coarsely perforated relatively stiff backing sheet by an intervening film of low fusing metal throughout the interforaminal area of the backing sheet, is modified by use of a coarse and stiff wire mesh backing, which has the intersections of the woven wire flattened to the thickness of the non-intersecting portions, in place of the perforated backing sheet. The intersections may be flattened by rolling.
