506,516. Winding coils; packages of wire; coating wire. MARCONI'S WIRELESS, TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Nov. 29, 1937, No. 32911. Convention date, Nov. 28, 1936. [Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii)] [Also in Group VIII] A self-supporting coil for electrical purposes is made by coating a continuous conductor 12, Fig. 3, with a substance 16 which can be rendered tacky in the presence of a suitable solvent, drying the coated conductor, bringing the dried coated conductor 10 into contact with the said solvent so as to render, the coating tacky and then winding the conductor into a coil while the coating is still tacky so that the turns of the coil become united by the coating. The coated and dried conductor 10 is wound on a reel 20, Fig. 2, and drawn therefrom over a guide roller 36 at the end of rod 30, pivoted in the reel support 22 and connected by a spring 48 to a rod 40 carrying a brake shoe 38 maintained against a brake drum 42 on the reel by a spring 44 secured to a rigid arm 46 ; by this means the tension of the conductor 10 proceeding from the roller 36 to the solvent' applying drum 54 is maintained constant. The drum 54 rotates in a bath 55 of the solvent and the coil is formed on a mandrel 60. The coating may be a lacquer compound and the solvent, acetone ; or a rubber compound which is rendered tacky by a mineral solvent; or a glue compound and the solvent, alcohol. Specification 308,508, [Class 35], is referred to.
