6647. Siemens Bros. Dynamo Works., [Siemens Schuckertwerke]. March 18. Transformers.-The insulation of transformer coils is smoothed and compressed by passing the coils between bands upon which pressure is exerted at right-angles to the direction of motion. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, groups of conductors b, covered with insulations i, are fixed between blocks p, p1, which may be made wedge shape. A band consisting of plates e, hinged together, and with rollers w at the hinges, is passed in opposite directions between fixed guides g above and below the coils b, so as to compress the insulation. These rollers and plates preferably form a continuous band running always in one direction; or they may reciprocate, acting, however, only in the direction to produce tightening of the insulation. In modifications, the rollers and plates, either of which may be used separately, are stationary and are pressed inwards by springs &c., a metal band being drawn between the plates or rollers and the coils, in opposite directions above and below the latter. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the coils are inserted at b1 between the distance-blocks p, which are then moved toward the left, the coils being removed at b2. Heat may be applied during the process.
