Metals and alloys, particularly of iron, are refined by blowing a gas jet containing at least 25% by volume oxygen at an acute angle against a limited area of the surface of molten metal or alloy to be refined contained within a lined rotary furnace inclined to the horizontal and moving the jet, preferably according to a predetermined program equal from one charge to the next, to impinge the surface during refining at different acute angles and limited areas along the longitudinal axis of the furnace. Movement of the jet may be effected in a rotary furnace having at least one twyer projecting therein above the charge (see Division F4) by pivoting the twyer by means of a driving device, which may be hydraulic, between limit position members.
