Hot synthesis gas from a melamine synthesis reactor containing substantially all the melamine product is contacted with a melt of urea at 150 C or above, as a result of which the melamine becomes suspended in the melt to the extent of 5-50% by weight thereof. The melamine is then suitably separated from the melt by centrifuging, the crystals of melamine washed with water, and the urea melt passed back to the melamine synthesis reactor. The reactor is operated at relatively low pressure, e.g. 7 atmospheres.
