Method and apparatus for producing carbon monoxide by reaction of glowing coke with oxygen and carbon dioxide

CO is prod. by passing O2 and CO2 over incandescent coke, which is supported on a rotating grid in a furnace. The O2 and CO2 are obtained from outside the furnace. The two reactions C+1/2O2 right arrow CO, and C + CO2 right arrow 2CO, the 1st being exothermic and the 2nd endothermic, occur simulataneously. The temp. of the reactants is kept below the m.p. of the ash produced by feeding back a portion of the CO produced. The ash is removed intermittently as powder. The CO2 reqd. can be obtd. by combustion, outside the furnace, of part of the CO. This process aids removal of ash and continuous operation. The CO product contains 1% H2.
