The ground cultivation machine has a number of rotors on vertical axes in a frame at right angles to the travel direction, and gear-driven so that adjacent ones rotate in opposite directions, from the tractor pto. The drive incorporates two or more shaft running in the travel direction and one above the other, one driving via a bevel gear onto a vertical rotor shaft, and the other coupled to the pto and driving the first via a variable-ratio unit. There are only two such shafts, the bottom one driving the rotor and the top one coupled by an intermediate shaft to the pto, its forward end being directly above a rotor shaft. The variable-speed unit coupling the two shafts together (17) is to the rear of the rotors (44). The two shafts (16, 18) can be mounted directly one above the other.
