The core 17 and the carrier 13 may be of steel and the sleeve 16 may be of silicon nitride, tungsten carbide or titanium carbide. The mandrel 6 is attached at one end to a plate which rests on a tube 7 engaging the die 4. The outer edge 12 of the mandrel tip carrier 13 is in sealing contact with the inner wall of the billet 8.
