As shown in Fig. 2 the object 10 to be coated is passed through a fluidised bed formed on a porous member 2 above a chamber 4 into which compressed air is supplied. The member 2 extends over additional chambers 3, 5 provided on either side thereof above which the unfluidised beds 18 are supported. Pressurized air is periodically supplied thereinto to discharge sintered plastics material in the beds into a hopper 15. In an alternative arrangement the downstream bed may be supported on a plate slidable over chamber 4 so as to vary the length of the fluidising section. Particulate material is supplied above the beds at 11.
