[Also in Divisions C5 and C7] A surface, e.g. of ceramic or metal such as copper brass or steel, is coated with a plurality of alternate layers of a fluorocarbon polymer and metal, to make a dry lubricant coating for bearings, by electrophoretically depositing particles (e.g. of .05 to .5 micron diameter) of fluorocarbon polymer, such as polytetrafluoroethylene (C 2 F 4 , polyhexafluoropropylene (C 3 F 6 ), polychlorotrifluoroethylene, polyvinyl (idene) fluoride, C 2 F 4 -C 3 F 6 copolymer, vinylidene fluoride-C 3 F 6 copolymer, polytrifluoropropylmelhyldichlorosilane, fluorosilicone elastomers, polyfluoroaniline or C 2 F 4 -CF 3 NO copolymer, on the surface in a plurality of alternate layers with electroplated layer of metal such as Cu, Ag, Au or Ni. For example, brass panels, similarly prepared as described in Specification 1178741, are coated with the dry lubricant by repeatedly immersing first as cathode in a solution supplying positive metal ions, then as anode in an aqueous dispersion of negatively charged fluorocarbon polymer particles.
