New furan- and thiophene-2-carboxylic acid derivs. are of formula (I): (where R' is halogen, CF3, alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, alkoxy, aralkoxy, aryloxy, alkylthio, arylthio, alkylsulphinyl, arylsulphinyl alkylsulphonyl, arylsulphonyl, alkylcarbonyl, arylcarbonyl or alkyloxycarbonyl, the alkyl groups being 1-6C, and the aryl residues opt. being substd. in the 2-,3- or 4-position by lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, lower alkylthio or halogen; R2 and R3 are H or R'; or R' + R2 is methylenedioxy; R4 and R5 are H or lower alkyl; R6 is H, lower alkyl or halogen; R7 is H, lower alkyl or alkali metal; and X and Z are O or S). (I) are hypolipaemic agents which reduce blood levels of low density lipoproteins (LPL) and very low density lipoproteins (VLPL) but only slightly lower (or even increase) blood levels of high density lipoproteins (HDL). They can thus be used in the treatment and propylaxis of atherosclerosis. Relative liever weight changes after administration of (I) are absent or only slight.
