1491465 Producing gas containing H 2 and CO SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 19 Feb 1975 [21 Feb 1974] 7903/74 Heading C5E A process for producing gas containing H 2 and CO comprises reacting diluted oxygen optionally preheated with a carbonaceous fuel in a first reaction zone for 0À02 to 20 seconds at a pressure of 1 to 200 kg/cmSP2/SP and at a relatively high temperature (1200 to 1700‹ C.) and introducing the resulting effluent to a second reaction zone in which the average temperature is kept at least 100‹ C. lower than that in the first reaction zone. Further fuel may be added to the effluent and/or the second reaction zone and further gas diluent may be added to the second reaction zone. The fuel and diluted oxygen may be premixed and injected under pressure. Suitable fuels are lignite, anthracite, bituminous coal, coke, shale oil, mineral oils or oil fractions, tar sand oil or natural gas. The oxygen may be diluted with steam, CO 2 , or N 2 , and the gas diluent added in the second stage may be steam, nitrogen, or CO 2 .
