Process for reducing the tendency of hydrolisable metal phosphide preparations to auto-ignite by treating the surface of metal phosphide particles with a hydrophobising substance, characterised in that without additional use of 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene an ammonium salt of an organic acid, preferably a carboxylic acid, comprising a hydrophobising aliphatic moiety in its molecule is applied onto the surface of the metal phosphide particles.
