Cathode current collectors for aluminium redn. cells

Section of a cathode current collector, embedded in the pot lining of an aluminium reduction cell, consists of electrically conducting bodies, surrounded by and wettable by metallic aluminium, fluid aluminium fluid when the cell is in operation. The bodies are close packed, of uniform size and shape. They may be cubes or flat plates, or a packed granular bed impregnated with aluminium. The top of the collector may be a solid cap, of electrically conducting refractory. The section may be contained in a refractory tube, the inner surface wetted with aluminium, the outer with electrolyte.
