The heat exchanger which acts as the heater (8) of the passenger compartment of the vehicle is used to increase the cooling of the coolant liquid of an internal combustion engine (1) when the temperature of the liquid exceeds a predetermined threshold value. In these circumstances, the passage for the liquid through the heater (8) is opened automatically and the electric fan (9,10) associated therewith is automatically activated in the opposite sense to the normal one in which it generates the flow of air heated by the heater (8) towards the passenger compartment. The electric fan (9, 10) is deactivated and the passage for the liquid through the heater (8) is closed when the temperature of the coolant liquid falls below the threshold value.
