A doctor blade (20) is made from an elongated strip (22) of reinforced composite material which material fibrillates when cut. A plurality of cuts (34, 36) are made in the material which form recesses (30). The recesses are offset to increase the effective thickness of the strip so that it can be inserted longitudinally or transversely into a doctor blade holder (50).
