PURPOSE: To detect a motion vector with high precision by detecting the motion vector from a converged minimum error point and the origin. ;CONSTITUTION: A point A1 of a preceding image (b) of a preceding frame corresponding to the origin A1' of a current image (a) is defined as a reference point and with this point as a center, a sample vector set is expanded. Then, matching processing is performed for calculating the amount of an error between a block formed by respective points instructed by sample vectors in this set and a block formed by the origin A1' of the current image (a). The minimum error point is detected out of the calculated error amount, and this is defined as a minimum error point 1. With the minimum error point 1 as a reference point, matching processing is similarly performed and a minimum error point 2 is calculated. Similarly, minimum error point detecting processing is repeated while updating the reference point until the change of this minimum error point is eliminated, and the minimum error points are narrowed down. During this processing, the same sample vector set is used and when the minimum error point change is eliminated, the vector from the final minimum error point to the origin A1 is defined as the motion vector.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
