NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by formula I [A is 1-4C alkylene or 3-7C saturated hydrocarbon ring; n is 2-4; D is carbon ring or heterocyclic ring which may contain 1-3 substituent groups (halogen, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, CF3 or NO2)]. EXAMPLE:N-[trans-2-(3-Phenylpropanoyl)cyclopentanecarbonyl]-L-prolinal. USE:Having inhibitory action on prolyl endopeptidase and useful for preventing and/or treating amnesia. PREPARATION:A prolinol derivative shown by formula II or formula III is oxidized under a mild condition (e.g. inert organic solvent with an oxidizing agent at 0-50 deg.C) to give a compound shown by formula I.
