A method for concentrating a variant nucleic acid which comprises effecting once a cycle consisting of the steps (1 to 3) to be described below or repeating the cycle at least twice: (1) the step of the preparation of a sample nucleic acid by amplifying a specific region of the target nucleic acid; (2) the step of the competitive hybridization comprising adding to the sample nucleic acid at least an equimolar amount of a standard labeled nucleic acid prepared by introducing a labeling substance capable of binding to a solid-phase carrier into a nucleic acid having a base sequence complementary to the normal nucleic acid in the specific region of the target nucleic acid, followed by mixing; and (3) the step of the separation and removal of the hybridization product having the labeling substance capable of binding to a solid-phase carrier and the remaining standard labeled nucleic acid contained in the reaction mixture after the competitive hybridization by trapping in a solid-phase carrier.
