For the enzyme, which is one of several cysteine proteolytic enzymes of pulmonary insects, the base sequence of a portion of its gene and the amino acid sequence deduced therefrom are provided by the present invention. These pneumococcal cysteine proteases and their nucleotide sequences can be used for the preparation of DNA probes, monoclonal flavors, vaccines and the like.
