The invention relates to methods and devices for cleaning surfaces (27) of vehicles (10), containers, glass surfaces, floors or such like, using brushes and a motor drive. In the diverse prior art the bristles are slack when the brushes are not operational. Their cleaning effect becomes active by virtue of the centrifugal force of the bristles, which are bent when they contact the surface to be cleaned. The invention provides for a way of generating a cleaning action in an economical manner which does not require a centrifugal force. To this end the brushes (1) or bristle bundles (12) with a multitude of densely packed bristles (2) are made to oscillate (28) at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the bristles (2), so that the cleaning is carried out, with addition of water, by the oscillating bristle tips (2a) which contact the surface (27) to be cleaned.
