A process for the preparation of diacerein in which crude diacerein is purified by crystallization with a mixture of solvents consisting of acetic acid and acetic anhydride, or acetic anhydride alone, the solution being optionally treated with ethylenediaminetetracetic acid to remove any traces of chromium.
