The method involves determining a desired value for the camshaft adjuster position and regulating the actual position with a regulator in the sense of generating the desired value. The regulation is carried out by a proportional integral differential regulator (104). The control parameters for the proportional integral differential regulator are determined depending on at least one parameter (103) representing the state of the hydraulic liquid.
