The method involves detecting a sequence of rotational speed values during operation of an internal combustion engine, where the sequence of the rotational speed values is approximated as a periodic function with a model function i.e. Fourier series function. A parameter i.e. Fourier coefficient, of the model function is determined, and characteristics i.e. angle position, of combustion of the engine are determined depending on the parameter. A scalar product is computed with one of the rotational speed values of the sequence of rotational speed values.
