The method involves estimating a portion of a fuel burnt during a combustion process for determining a parameter of the combustion process in an internal combustion engine, where the fuel is injected into a cylinder of the combustion engine. The portion of the fuel is estimated based on pressure and temperature of gases in the cylinder, residue gas portion in the cylinder and injection pressure of the fuel. A fuel injection rate is determined from an injection amount of the fuel and duration of an injection process. An independent claim is also included for a controller for controlling a direct fuel injection system of an internal combustion engine comprising a control module for executing a model based control strategies.
