A supported catalyst, particularly for the polymerization and/or copolymerization of olefins, is prepared by milling a hydrogel, producing a slurry based on the finely particulate hydrogel, drying the slurry comprising the finely particulate hydrogel to give the support for catalysts,, and producing the supported catalyst by applying at least one transition metal and/or at least one transition metal compound to the support. Preparing a supported catalyst, particularly for the polymerization and/or copolymerization of olefins, involves preparing a hydrogel; the hydrogel to give a finely particulate hydrogel; producing a slurry based on the finely particulate hydrogel; drying the slurry comprising the finely particulate hydrogel to give the support for catalysts; and producing the supported catalyst by applying at least one transition metal and/or at least one transition metal compound to the support for catalysts and, if appropriate, activating the applied metal and/or compound. A finely particulate hydrogel in which at least 5 vol.% of the particles, based on the total volume of the particles, have a particle size of greater than 0 to =3 mu m; and/or at least 40 vol.% of the particles, based on the total volume of the particles, have a particle size of greater than 0 to =12 mu m; and/or at least 75 vol.% of the particles, based on the total volume of the particles, have a particle size of greater than 0 mu m to =35 mu m, is produced in the milling step. Independent claims are also included for: (1) supported catalyst, particularly for the polymerization and/or copolymerization of olefins; (2) the use of supported catalyst for the polymerization and/or copolymerization of olefins, where the polymerization and/or copolymerization is carried out in the presence of supported catalyst; (3) olefin polymer obtained using the supported catalyst; and (4) fiber, film or molding comprising polymers of olefins as major or exclusive component.
