In the production of monoxide of carbon and optionally hydrogen by separation of a gas mixture by adsorption and cryogenic stages of separation, the adsorption stage using two adsorbers (4A, 4B) at the same period, is followed by a regeneration phase. The adsorber is saturated to an elution phase with carbon monoxide. During the cycle, the purified gas mixture is liquefied, which is stored in a capacitor. The liquified mixture is separated into a fluid rich carbon monoxide by a tower reactor. The capacitor (7) is constituted by a cryogenic distillation column (9). The liquefied gas mixture level increases during the cycle apart from the elution phase and/or drops only during the elution phases. The purified gas mixture is sent to a methane wash column, a gas enriched in hydrogen is racked at the head of the methane wash column, a liquid enriched in carbon monoxide is sent from the methane wash column at the head of a stripping column (11) and sent to a distillation column of carbon monoxide and methane. A liquid rich in methane is racked in tank of the distillation column of carbon monoxide and methane and sent to the head of the methane wash column and a gas flow rich in carbon monoxide is racked on the head of the distillation column of carbon monoxide and methane. The volume of liquid rich in methane and carbon monoxide in the tank (18) of the distillation column decreases during a part of the cycle apart from the elution phases and this volume increases during a part of the elution phases. An independent claim is also included for a generating system for the production of carbon monoxide and/or hydrogen by separation of a gas mixture.
