Detonation induction distances in methane-oxygen and carbon monoxide - oxygen mixtures have been measured in a. 15 -mm diameter tube for various fuel concentrations at initial pressures of 1, 5, 10, and 25 stratospheres and an initial temperature of 40°C. A stoichiametric mixture of carbon monoxide and oxygen at an initial pressure of 100 atmospheres ignited spontaneously in the detonation tube; the result¬ant explosion destroyed the tube. A new 50-mm inside diameter, 12-foot long detonation tube was fabricated and installed to replace the former tube. Experiments were repeated with carbon monoxide - oxygen and hydrogen-oxygen mixtures in the new tube to determine the effect of tube diameter upon the formation of a detonation. It was not possible to obtain detonation of carbon monoxide - oxygen mixtures in this tube for initial pressures of 1, 5, or 10 atmospheres. The induction distances of various hydrogen-oxygen mixtures in the 50~mm tube are practically the same as in the 15-mm diameter tube for an initial pres= sure of 1 atmosphere.
